Prevention
The Lipid & Wellness Clinic offers a structured, comprehensive program designed to assist patients in reaching their goals by: (1) Reducing the chance of further surgery or angioplosty. (2) Preventing cholesterol buildup in the heart vessels. (3) Reversing cholesterol build up through regression therapy.

Diagnosis
For those who develop heart disease, better diagnosis provides less inconvenience for the patient, shorter hospital stays and better outcomes.

Magnetic Resonance ImagingThey include:
  • Advances in nuclear cardiac stress testing to diagnose blockage of blood vessels to the heart
  • Improved stress echocardiography
  • Skilled analysis in diagnosing serious rhythm problems
  • Use of cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogrphy) to analyze heart and heart valve functions
  • Advanced noninvasive ultrasound imaging to diagnose blockages in blood vessels to the head and extremities
  • Implantable recorders to diagnose infrequent heart rhythm abnormalities
  • Magnetic resonance angiography to visualize certain blood vessels without the use of contrast dye. This can be done as a noninvasive outpatient procedure.
Treatment
Balloon Radius StentToday improved technology allows for therapy for previously untreatable blockages and for minimally invasive treatment of almost all heart rhythm abnormalities.
  • Rotablator atherectomy to actually remove blockages
  • Intracoronary stents with ultrasound guidance, which often can provide better results than angioplasty
  • Intracoronary Ultrasound Guidance for better results in difficult angioplasty and stent cases
  • Radiofrequency ablation of most heart rhythm abnormalities
  • Implantation of life saving defibillators without the use of open chest surgery
Better Outcomes / Shorter Lengths of Stay
  • A greater number of patients don't have to go into surgery for bypass because of improved treatment in the Cardiac catherization laboratory
  • Diagnostic catheterization can be done as an outpatient
  • Patients treated in the cath lab with balloon and stent-like procedures are admitted in the morning and go home the next day in many cases
  • Many patients who previously needed surgery now are treated in the the Cardiac catherization laboratory
  • For those who do need surgery, we have helped introduce minimally invasive bypass surgery to the Tulsa area
Building a Stong Foundation
The Oklahoma Heart Foundation annually sponsors three educational symposiums for physicians and and other healthcare professionals. By contributing to the continuing education of these health professionals, we hope to improve the overall quality of care for patients in Tulsa hospitals. Our teaching video, Surviving Your Heart Attack, continues to win multiple national and international awards for valuable patient education.

Better Outcomes / Shorter Lengths of Stay
Ongoing research is another benefit for Oklahoma Heart Institute patients who receive the newest, best therapies available.

Oklahoma Heart Institute was one of the major trial and development centers for the WAVE perfusion catheter. This catheter helps make complex balloon angioplasty safer.

Oklahoma Heart was also a major trial center for the landmark CARE study. It showed that cholesterol-lowering in patients with known heart disease reduced the risk of subsequent heart attacks, even in patients with normal or slightly elevated cholesterol levels.
